Colored Diamonds Are All The Rage

Colored diamonds have hit the diamond market with the force of a sledgehammer. It’s now possible to find diamonds in almost every color of the spectrum, including gray, yellow, orange, red, green, purple, pink and sometimes brown or even black! These colored diamonds are created by flaws in the structure, and other imperfections within the diamond itself. Light is refracted differently, resulting in a myriad of colors.

Many colored diamonds are so ‘colored” that they don’t look real, and thus detract from the value and appearance of the diamond. Especially when it comes to many of the unusual colors, such as yellows, reds greens etc. The blue colored diamonds have had a somewhat better reception, in part because they have something of a track record. The Hope Diamond, arguably the most famous diamond of all time, is a blue diamond. Blue diamonds are thought quite attractive by most people who see them.

White diamonds can have color too, but in their case it is more like a slight tint. White diamonds that aren’t considered colored diamonds have a grading scale devised by the Gemological Institute of America, which ranges from D to Z, with D, E, and F being colorless; G, H, I and J being nearly colorless; and K, L, and M being a faint yellow or brown; N, O, P, Q and R appearing very light yellow or brown; and S, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z being light yellow or brown. Anything with more color than these stones are considered colored diamonds and are graded for quality on scale used for other colored stones, such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires.

Most retailers and many online merchants now carry an assortment of colored diamonds, and there is more choice that ever before. In a market that’s very staid and traditional, colored diamonds are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise pretty predictable industry. When shopping for colored diamonds the same rules apply that would apply to any other diamond purchase; and while the 4 C’s are somewhat less important because the colored diamonds you’re looking for in the first place are by definition flawed, other quality, warranty and price concerns. Carat size is still a factor in these concerns, as is the cut you’re looking for.

In short, just because you’re looking at a product that’s inherently flawed, don’t think you can’t have a quality diamond the way you want it. Remember, diamonds, even colored diamonds are very much a buyer’s market!
